The Gardener and the Machine is a guide to designing resilient systems in a world of complex, adaptive systems. By blending ecology, technology, and social science, it illustrates why control-obsessed solutions often fail and emphasizes the importance of systems thinking. Instead, it advocates for optimization by cultivating the right conditions, which can lead to resilience in complex systems, meaningful outcomes, and durable results.

Dr. Art Villanueva is a systems engineer and artificial intelligence practitioner specializing in resilience in complex systems.
